10ply Universal Fingerless Gloves
We have a rapidly growing street-sleeping population here in my home city of Melbourne, many of whom are left exposed to cold, wind and weather. While Melbourne is far more temperate than many other parts of the world, I still wanted to make sure that as many of our city’s street-sleepers as possible could have something handmade, warm and useful.
This fingerless glove pattern was developed as a way of quickly knitting up fingerless gloves to fit a wide variety of wrists and hands – the quicker the better, but also the more versatile in fit the better.
I am offering this pattern for free, in the hopes that many of you will consider knitting a spare pair of gloves (or twenty!) for any homeless people in your area.
You can also look into charities and community support organisations that help homeless populations in your area, and see if they are happy to accept donations of hand-knitted goodies.
Keep an eye out for my 8ply version of this pattern, coming soon!
Materials
About 50g of 10ply/aran-weight yarn (or worsted-weight, depending on who you ask)
Alternatively, you can use two 50g balls in contrasting colours to make two pairs using CC stripes - notes in pattern include instructions for optional colourwork stripes.
Needles
Knit on 6mm/US10 needles, to open up the ribbing a little for tight knitters. (Note - if you are a loose knitter, you might want to go down to a 5.5mm/US9 needle)
Gauge
Unstretched, about 5 stitches and 6 rows per inch, or 20 stitches and 24 rows per 4”/10cm
(Note - the 1 x 1 ribbing is designed to stretch for those who need it)
