Enlightened thinking was changing babies dress from swaddling to less restrictive clothing. Babies of this period would wear a binder, a shirt made of fine cotton with flaps at front and back to fold over the neck of the barrow coat. A barrow coat made of flannel sometimes called a whittle, a petticoat, a low necked short sleeved dress, bootees, bonnet, shawl, and bib.
