1:12 - A Layette for Rose
by Nicola Smith
Layette to fit a 2” baby doll for the period 1860 to 1915.
Instructions for dress, nappy, bootees, wrap, bonnet, cloak, hood, and mittens.
Materials: Size 20 knitting needles, 2/16 (1ply) cotton, 4 buttons, 2mm silk ribbon and 2 stitch holders.
Designed from contemporary patterns, photographs, and fashion plates.
Babies of this period would wear a binder, cross over vest, nappy, booties & several petticoats including one of flannel, dress, wrap, mittens, bonnet & cloak. The cloak or sometimes called a pelisse was considered more fashionable at this period for outdoor wear than the shawl.
The hood was a warm bonnet attached lappet to keep baby’s neck warm.
