This shawl was published in London, by artist Eleonore Riego De La Branchardiere, in 1864. I started this project, thinking it was a shawl. I was delighted to discover it was the perfect size and
shape for a bosom wrap.

This sontag is constructed differently than the other pieces in this book. Not because sontags were not made in this fashion historically, but rather because I avoided the patterns that used this technique. Why? Because, the sizing is not as adjustable as those that are started from the bottom and have the sides worked separately. While we can slightly adjust the size of this piece, if your measurements require greater flexibility, I recommend using the striped garter stitch shawl pattern and adding this fun border.

This pattern also makes a delightful shawl, and doesn’t have to cross around the bosom at all. Feel free to work in in dk weight with larger needles, add more rows to the center, and a little tie
at the neck to keep it in place.
