A lovely, all-over cable design becomes even more intricate and textured with the addition of a little lace. The resulting cable and lace stitch adorns the front and back of this cozy cardigan.

For an interesting contrast that still echoes the main stitch, the generous sleeves are knit in just the lace portion of the stitch pattern.

The cardigan is knit from the bottom up in separate pieces. Short rows are used to shape the shoulders, which are then joined with a 3-needle bind off.

The full sleeves are picked up and knit straight down to the wrist in lace, gathered just before the ribbed cuff, and then seamed.

Lastly, the ribbed collar and front bands are picked up and knit to create the button closure finish.

Shown here in a very soft, worsted-weight alpaca yarn that allows the stitch patterns to show to their best advantage. Or easily substitute another soft, worsted-weight yarn (some suggestions on next page).

Cable and lace stitch patterns are both charted and written out.
