I was asked to teach a class in beginner’s entrelac, and to offer a particular scarf pattern. The trouble was, that pattern wasn’t anything like the way I’d taught myself to knit entrelac! Since I couldn’t find what I wanted, I wrote my own. 3S stands for “Six Stitch Square”, which is the width of each individual square.

Most entrelac patterns I’ve seen start with the purl side. I found it much easier, however, to start on the knit side. So if you like beginning with knit stitches, then give this a try!

This pattern should work with sport, dk, or worsted weight yarn. Varigated yarns pattern beautifully with entrelac, or you could use two (or more) colors, changing on each new tier. You will have to adjust your needle size, and the finished scarf width and length will be narrower or wider. Length is determined by you - just knit until it’s long enough!

For knitters familiar with entrelac, this pattern should lend itself to lace or stitch patterns, so long as they are a multiple that adds up to 6.

Happy Knitting!
