The Story
Kestrels are the smallest falcons and can often be spotted hovering as they search for prey. A very good friend of mine goes by the name “Kestrel” because he works as an outdoor educator, where the students call the staff by their nature names. I volunteered to make him something with a Kestrel on it, thinking that I would be sure to find something on Ralvery. To my surprise, I couldn’t find any patterns with Kestrels and so ended up designing these fingerless mittens. The pattern here is the product of much trial and error, and perfect for any bird nerd or nature lover in your life.

Materials
Yarn: Rowan Lima yarns (http://www.knitrowan.com/yarns/lima) have an unusual braided texture that contributes to the feathery look of the bird.
Blue: 100m, or one 50g skein (Amazon #879)
Redish brown: 50m, or one 25g skein (Machu Picchu #885)
Cream: 10m, or part of one 25g skein (Bolivia #890)
Needles: Two sets of double pointed needles in sizes US 0 and 2
Odds and Ends: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and row counter

This pattern contains separate charts for each hand to make it easy to follow, but is not recommended as a first colorwork pattern as it does involve handling three colors simultaneously.
