This is a super warm winter hat, inspired by the cold weather we have been having these days and by an amazing book of traditional Latvian mittens. Latvians have a rich history of traditional knitting and most knits were done in stranded knitting, using several colors. The color work pattern comes from a glove from Kurland region, Ventspils.

Size: the pattern is written for an adult woman, but can be easily adjusted to fit a child. I have added some notes on modificatioins for customizing the fit or adjusting to a different gauge.

Yarn: about 110-120 meters (120-130 yards) of base color and about 30-40 meters (33-43 yards) of two contrast colors of DK weight yarn.

Difficulty: advanced. I recommend using provisional cast on. You will need to knit, knit 2 stitches together, yarn over, do stranded knitting and knit together cast on edge with the stitches on your needle. The colorwork pattern is not too difficult.
