A Mermaid’s Tale is the first in a Mythical and Enchanted Creatures sock collection, which I am having loads of fun creating. So, what is the inspiration behind this particular pattern…….

As I sat knitting these, floods of memories came back of my childhood. I was always an imaginative child and spent hours upon hours in my own little play world. I grew up in the English countryside and our home had a huge orchard that was home to a lot of happy play times. At the bottom there was, and still is, a babbling river, which I used to play in on hot Summer days, catching minnows in my net (and releasing them), feeding the trout that occasionally splashed and catching a flash of electric blue as the resident Kingfisher speeded past. It comes to no surprise now that I have always had a fascination with mythical and enchanted creatures after growing up in such an enchanting space.

One of those creatures that I loved and wished I could be, was a Mermaid. I imagined doing somersaults under the surface, jumping up high above the water and making a huge splash. And the hair, let’s not forget the idea of having beautiful long locks just floating around with the currents.

So, with that, I thought I would create a collection of sock patterns inspired by mythical creatures and stories. These socks are knit in a beautiful, easily memorisable lace pattern, which remind me of Mermaid tails just disappearing beneath the calm waters. You can adjust this easily for half the leg if you wish; or continue round the entire leg. Have fun with it! The pattern repeat is done over 8 stitches, so there are wonderful options to make them your own.

Thank you to my test knitters for being so wonderful, giving great feedback, positivity and spending their precious time in doing so.
