This unisex hat is knitted using the stranded knitting technique typical to Fair Isle Knitting, in the round on circular needles. Color work fabric can be a bit unforgiving, so the fabric gauge has been designed to provide enough stretch to fit a head up to an inch (or maybe even a bit more than an inch) larger in circumference than the unstretched finished hat. Consequently, you’ll want to achieve a fabric that is not too dense.

This hat can be made with a square or rounded crown and each of those have some options. The square top can be worn as is, or the points simply sewn together to create an “envelope” top. Alternately, the corners of the squares can be embellished with handmade or store bought pom poms or tassels if desired.

The rounded crown can also be embellished with a tassel or pom pom.

This pattern uses 100% wool worsted weight yarn. This will yield the best finished results. Samples use Rowan Pure Wool Worsted and Cascade 220. The hat requires two colors. Here are some yarn estimates and their corresponding hat/head sizes:

MC: 15 (20, 25, 30, 40) gm/35 (45, 55, 66, 88) yds/32 (42, 50, 60, 80) m
