A Study in Shale is a scarf I originally designed as a Christmas present for my mom. The pattern is a Shetland one known by many names, one of them being Old Shale. It’s simple and easily memorised, and the first lace pattern I ever knitted.

Width is easily altered by adding or removing repeats of the lace pattern between the garter edges. Length is determined by preference, stamina and yarn available.
