The original pattern for this simple but striking cardigan appeared in one of the ever popular Odhams Press publications written by Margaret Murray and Jane Koster. The pattern here is adapted from the 1946 publication Practical Family Knitting, which features other Tyrolean-inspired garments for mothers and daughters.

With no intricate textured stitch patterns, this is simple to knit, and modern double knitting yarn is a perfect match for the original. The body is knitted all in one piece to the yoke, and the strong shoulder line creates a 1940s silhouette, which can be enhanced further with shoulder pads. The construction of the yoke gives a Tyrolean touch of textured interest, echoing the moss stitch of the sleeves and highlighted by the cream contrast. The striking block of colour is softened by a pretty crocheted shell stitch edging, and works as successfully in reverse, as red on a white background.

The recreated model has been left unadorned as in the original, and was chosen in order to offer a simpler pattern than some of the more complicated projects. The plain stocking stitch bodice is ideal for creative embellishing, if desired, and the clever increases for the back shaping provide a perfect ‘frame’ for embroidery.

This pattern would lend itself to any colour combination, and even the introduction of other colours for the crochet trimmed edgings, and still be in keeping with a traditional Tyrolean look – for example, black as the main colour with green yoke and red trim. There is a wealth of choice of colours in modern DK and so many excellent synthetic/wool mixes, which allow this to be a very economical project. Two modern yarn options are given for an economical or a more luxurious version.
