The Aargau hat is a double-layer winter hat with a k3p1 ribbing pattern. Above the ribbing, the hat is worked in stockinette stitch. The hat is entirely worked with circular needles, except the reductions and bind off sections, which are better worked with double pointed needles.

  • SIZES: M, L
  • HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE: 58, 61 cm / 22.8”, 24”
  • YARN: 150 (200) g Sommer Merino 125 (50g = 125 m / 136 yards) or Lana Grossa Merino Uno (50g = 125 m / 136 yards)
  • GAUGE: 24 stitches x 32 rows in 10 x 10 cm / 4”x4”
  • NEEDLES: 3 mm (US 2.5) circular needles in 40 or 60 cm (16” or 23”); 3mm dpns; 3mm crochet hook
  • ADDITIONAL MATERIAL: Waste yarn, tapestry needle, stitch markers

Two sizes are included in the pattern:

  1. Size M (58 cm / 22.8”), which is the average men’s size with a tight fit

  2. Size L (61 cm / 24”), which is a larger men’s size with a looser fit.

The hat can be worked in two versions:

  1. Single layer hat: the hat is simply worked bottom-up starting from the ribbing.

  2. Double layer hat: the hat has a provisional cast on and is worked identically bottom-up and top-down starting from the ribbing.
