Ada Sweater
The Ada is a free chunky sweater that works up fast on 8 mm needles — fluffy, satisfying and beginner-friendly, but quick enough that experienced knitters keep casting it on too. The name? Ada Lovelace was the world’s first computer programmer. We named this one after her to honour that legacy and to keep inspiring women to build things — with code or with yarn.
It’s completely free, and that’s on purpose. Knit Ada and you’ll see exactly what a Dreamknit pattern feels like from the first cast-on to the last bind-off: clear written instructions, a video tutorial for every step, and sizing that actually fits. No catch — just our way of inviting you in.
This pattern is made with the Dreamknit Design Tool, and that’s where the real magic is. Knit Ada exactly as shown, or open it in the tool and change the yarn, the fit or the details to make it your own — or start a brand-new design from scratch. Every Dreamknit pattern is a starting point, not a fixed recipe. As a member you can customize and download any of our patterns for free, just like this one.
The sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down with raglan increases. You begin by casting on stitches for the yoke and working back and forth with increases to shape the neckline opening. The shoulders are joined by the front neck, and the yoke is knitted in the round with raglan increases. The sleeve stitches are placed on hold, and the body is worked in the round. The neckline ribbing is worked by picking up stitches along the neckline opening. Finally, the sleeves are worked from the held stitches.
