What better way to celebrate mid winter than with a cosy, colourwork cowl in gentle plant dyed colours? For the Advent Flower Cowl I have combined a selection of traditional Fair Isle motifs, added braided detail and coloured corrugated rib for extra interest with beautiful British wool, naturally dyed by Nellie and Eve in her studio in Wales. The slightly rustic but soft wool is perfect for stranded colourwork and the double thickness created by the floats at the back of the work makes for a super warm, cosy fabric.

This design has been commissioned for Nellie and Eve’s 2022 Advent Minis set and colours chosen and specified in the colour charts are from that set, however you could easily substitute your own Advent minis from another dyer or even design your own colourway from leftovers from other projects.

Skill Level
Moderate

Skills needed

  • knit, purl, knitting in the round
  • Following written pattern recipe - inserting stitch patterns where indicated
  • following colourwork charts
  • Stranded colourwork - using two colours in one row

Finished Dimensions

Height 30cm/12”
Width 29cm/11.5”
Circumference 58cm/23”

Gauge

33sts x 38rows = 10cm/4” over colourwork, after blocking.

Yarn Requirements

Nellie and Eve mini skeins are approx 20g/90m each. The pattern used 11 colours from the Advent set - I used nearly the whole skein of my chosen Col 1 and less than half a mini skein of each of the other colours.

Black and white charts are included in the pattern if you would like to design your own colourway.

Substituting Yarn

Yarn kits for both colourways are available from Nellie and Eve but should you want to substitute then be aware that slightly “toothy” wool works best for stranded colourwork. Light 4ply or jumperweight Shetland wool is ideal but any reasonably toothy, lightweight wool yarn could work.
Swatching is key and yarn amounts may differ!

Needles

2.75mm circular needle, 50cm length (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Please note there are two versions of this pattern included in your purchase. I have designed two colourways and uploaded them as two seperate pdfs to save confusion over charts and colour keys. The patterns are identical - only the colour key/charts and illustrative photographs are different.

I am trying a new Pay What You Can Afford model. The price shown reflects the true value and best represents the amount of work it takes to produce the pattern from start to finish.
