I started to think of this shrug at the change of the season, while one of my favourite cardigan became too hot to wear but when you still need a little something on your shoulders to avoid freezing at night. I wanted a light shrug, easy to mix-and-match with any wardrobe and, most of all, easy to layer with any top or dress.

Started at the centre back, with a provisional (vertical) cast-on, the main body is worked sideways, first back-and-forth, then in the round when you are working the sleeves. The collar band is then picked-up and worked in the round in plain stockinette, making it extra comfy to knit and wear. This construction means that there isn’t a right way up.

Sizes: 1 [2, 3, 4, 5] (6, 7, 8, 9) to fit bust sizes of 86.5 [91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5] cm / 34 [36, 38, 40, 42] (44, 46, 48, 50)“, including 0-5 cm / 0-2” ease.
See the table in pictures for detailed measurements.

Yardage: 933 [968, 990, 1025, 1043] (1082, 1113, 1148, 1192) m / 1020 [1059, 1083, 1121, 1141] (1183, 1217, 1255, 1304) yds.

Samples:

  • Blue sample is worked in Le Chat qui Tricote Figaro, col. Paon. I am wearing a size 3 on a 100 cm / 39⅜” full bust. As I’m planning to continue to wear it once I’m not breastfeeding anymore, I knitted my usual size which is size 3.
  • Pink sample is worked in Le Chat qui Tricote Figaro, col. Fleur de Judée. Model is wearing a size 3 on a 95 cm / 37.5” bust.

Needles:

  • Body, sleeves, and collar: 3.5 mm / US #4, 80 cm / 32” or longer circular needles.
  • Ribbing: 3 mm / US #2, 80 cm / 32” or longer circular needles.
  • (Optional) Maching sets of double-pointed needles to knit the sleeves in the round.

Other Notions: 6 stitch markers; waste yarn for the provisional cast-on; 1 tapestry needle.

Aiguilles :

  • Corps, manches et col : 3.5 mm / US #4, aiguilles circulaires de 80 cm / 32” de long minimum.
  • Côtes: 3 mm / US #2, aiguilles circulaires de 80 cm / 32” de long minimum
