Aeryn
Aeryn is one of those designs where the knitting itself is an adventurous journey, with each section bringing something new to the process. Its modular construction combines sections worked in different directions, while the Roosimine inlay takes centre stage, adding texture and colour, framed by knitted welts that bring all the elements together.
I love how these details work together to create a cardigan that feels distinctive yet wearable. Thoughtful shaping and careful finishing ensure a great fit, and the accompanying video tutorial guides you through working the Roosimine inlay and mastering the sewn tubular bind-off.
If you enjoy a knitting project that keeps you engaged from the first stitches to the last, and leaves you with a cardigan you’ll love wearing, Aeryn might be just the one for you.
VIDEO
This Moonstruck Knits video shows the Aeryn cardigan in motion. It contains a tutorial for working the Roosimine inlay, and the Sewn Tubular Bind-off (worked flat).
CONSTRUCTION
Aeryn is worked modularly from the top down. The patterned back panel is worked first in the Roosimine technique to just above the waist, with the shoulders shaped using short rows. The back stitches are then placed on hold.
Stitches are picked up for the front Roosimine panels, which are worked to the same length as the back while shaping the shoulders and front neckline. Next, stitches are picked up along the sides of the front and back panels to work the side sections. A set of welts is incorporated before continuing in Stockinette stitch and shaping the armholes. The front and back side sections are then joined using Kitchener Stitch.
Stitches are picked up along the lower edge of the side sections to work a set of horizontal welts. The lower body is then worked in the Roosimine technique, with another set of welts added before the ribbing. Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armholes, and the sleeves are worked in the round.
Finally, stitches are picked up around the neckline to work a single welt followed by the mock neck. Stitches are then picked up along the front edges for the button bands, where a final set of welts is worked before the bands are finished in double knitting.
