Relive the magic of Narnia with this lusciously cabled hat and mitt set designed by Katy Carroll especially for Little Skein.

The Age of Winter hat (and mitts) recall the candle flame of the old-fashioned lamppost where young Lucy Pevensie first encounters the faun, Mr. Tumnus, in the land of Narnia. Despite the bitter chill, the lamppost burns without fuel through day and night, providing illumination in the endless winter.

The hat’s lantern flame motif is composed of intertwining cables that look far more complex than they are to knit, making this a beautiful gift for a loved one or for yourself. Add a plush pom-pom for a touch of vintage whimsy.

Sizes:
Small/medium: 161⁄2 inches (unstretched) fits head sizes 20 to 22 inches
Large: 171⁄2 inches (unstretched) fits head sizes 22 to 23 inches

PLEASE NOTE: This densely cabled fabric produces a snug hat. If in doubt, choose the size Large. Also, many knitters have chosen to add 1-2 more 4-row cable repeats in the very beginning of the hat, to ensure enough height and/or to make a slouchy effect.

Skills needed: Ideal for an intermediate knitter or a somewhat experienced beginner. To knit The Age of Winter, you will need to be able to:

  • knit and purl

  • knit in the round

  • cable stitches

  • increase and decrease stitches

  • read a chart or follow written directions
