The colorwork pattern on this hat was adapted from the pattern on a woven belt from Halliste Parish in Southern Estonia. I named the attern for my friend Aire Salmre, who was a child in a Displaced Persons camp in Germany after World War II (1939–1945). She immigrated to the United States with her family and later was the last American editor of Triinu magazine, the only Estonian-language magazine for Estonians in exile before it ceased publication in 1995. She has been a wonderful help to me in my research into Estonian life and knitting.
