The AKAL shawl was created for our 2021 knitalong; our accessory-along, where we knit all the accessories throughout fall.

It is knit in a rustic wool from Danish sheep, locally sourced and spun. This yarn asked to become a rustic shawl, without frills or any embellishments – just the basics. It is knit in garter stitch and Spider-lace, and it is large enough to keep your neck and shoulders warm. The only decoration on the AKAL shawl is the two-color ribbing at the bind-off, created with a subtle contrast.

This is a very easy, beginner-friendly shawl, making it perfect for the fall’s TV-knitting, or as a first try in lace-knitting.

Measurements:
92.5 x 33.5 inches (235 x 87 cm) after blocking

Yardage:
300 gr. DK weight, approximately 270 meters (295 yards) pr. 100 gr. in main color (885 yards) and
20 gr. DK weight, approximately 270 meters (295 yards) pr. 100 gr. (59 yards) in contrast color.

The sample is knit in Dansk Østersøuld (Baltic Sea Wool) from By C Gundersen (main color) and Semilla Melange from BC Garn

Needles:
Size 8 US (5 mm), preferably circular needles, as you will have a lot of stitches on the needles at one point.

Gauge:
15 st x 20 rows in garter stitch after blocking = 4 x 4 inches. Gauge is not really important in a shawl – look at the fabric you’re creating, and decide if you like it! This shawl is very easy to make smaller or larger, so you can just compensate for a too loose or too tight gauge this way.
