These nordic style thick winter socks knit up quickly in DK weight yarn. They are great as house socks, sleeping socks or inside big, loose fitting winter boots.

The construction of these socks might challenge a few of your preconceptions about sock knitting. They are a bit different, and that is exactly what makes them fun to knit!
Like with their older sister, the Alder Fingerless Mitts, we take advantage of the attributes of chevron-knit fabric to shape the garment. Instead of adding increases, we omit decreases in the stitch pattern to form the heel gusset, and we use the small arch the naturally scalloped fabric creates at the base of the heel as a substitute for a short row heel turn.

The socks are worked toe up, with a pontoon toe. They feature slipped stitches to accentuate the decrease lines of the stitch pattern (this actually makes centered double decreases easier to work), and the line of slipped stitches flows seamlessly into the decreases at the back of the heel. The leg is worked in the same chevron rib stitch pattern that is used in the Alder Fingerless Mitts.

Sizes:
S (M, L), to fit a midfoot circumference of about 21 (22.5, 24)

through back loop, knitting or purling through front loop
of a stitch sitting backwards), decreases: k2tog, p2tog, ssk
