London is a city of perpetual motion. It can seem as though everyone has somewhere urgent to be, and that the streets exist only to carry them there as quickly as possible. But occasionally, a space in the city resists the rush. It slows you down just by being somewhere worth stopping.

Aldwych has been doing just that. This sweeping crescent off the Strand, once thick with traffic, has been gradually reclaimed: pavements widened, the grand London Plane trees along its curve preserved and celebrated instead sacrificed to the road. What was a thoroughfare is becoming a place to be. Somewhere to sit under a canopy of leaves, to notice the long curve of the crescent, to feel the particular city pleasure of lush greenery in an unexpected concrete corner.

The Aldwych Shawl is a shallow, long triangle worked in DK weight yarn. Rows of garter stitch build a satisfying, squishy fabric, punctuated by rhythms of easy chevron lace. A simple knit to settle into.
