The Alex Onsie is a little onesie - you may also call it a body suit, or a short sleeved and short legged babygrow.
It’s a gender neutral style for both baby boys and girls, and fits from premature sizes, to age 2-3.

This pattern is designed for the Preemie Crochet Challenge by Sunflower Cottage Crochet. As part of that event, this pattern will be free on the 16th, 17th and 18th of September, 2025, through the blog hop below.

About the pattern
This little onesie buttons down the front and across the nappy-diaper to make dressing and undressing a small baby as easy as possible.

Sizes
Finished measurement:
A: chest with 5 cm / 2 inch positive ease:
36 (41, 46, 51) 56, 61 cm
14 (16, 18, 20) 22, 24 inches

B: Length of body from folded flap to shoulder (adjustable)
26 (29, 30, 34) 38.5, 41 cm
10 ¼ (11 ¾, 12, 13 ¾) 15 ¼, 16 ¼ inches

Tension/gauge

23 stitches and 24 rows in 10cm / 4 inches squared with 5mm hook.
Matching gauge is important to get the correct size. A free stitch tutorial for moss stitch is available here, https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/every-way-moss-s...
and the Afghan blocks can be used as a gauge swatch for this project, and later become a cup coaster or block in a blanket. Yarn requirements given are sufficient to make the onesie, and one 6 inch square block from the stitch tutorial.

Skill level
This is an intermediate level pattern, which might suit an adventurous beginner. It involves shaping, but only uses one simple stitch.

Crochet language
This pattern is written in English, with both U.K. and US versions available.

Accessibility
This pattern comes in 3 formats, choose between ‘standard’, ‘large print’, and ‘screen reader’.
All versions of this pattern are in black text, using Monesterat - a clear, sans serif font.
They use an easy to read layout which includes bold for all emphasis, and avoid italics or block capitals.
Text is left justified throughout, and no columns are used.
All instructions are fully written out. Some illustrative pictures are included, but all required information is in the text.
The standard version of this pattern is presented in 15 point font.
The Large Print version is in 22 point font, with additional descriptive text describing images.
The abbreviation free version is in 20 point font. All text is written out as full words, and no abbreviations are used. This may be helpful for dyslexic and neurodiverse people who struggle to read patterns. Please note at this point (September 2025) this pattern has not been tested on a screen reader, as I can not do that myself. Previous patterns with similar layout have been tested and approved by staff from ‘Inclusion London’.
