The Algiz mittens are inspired by old runes, and particularly by the Algiz rune.
Some people believe Algiz comes from the word for Elk, wether thats correct or not I dont know.
However, the name stuck to the mittens and so did the Elk/moose.
The Algiz rune is for protection, and hopefully these mittens will protect your hands from the cold.

The mitten is knitted in the round, using double point needles.

I´ve written the pattern with a twined string in the cuff, if you dont like it just knit a stockinette round instead of the holes for the string.

There´s a Latvian braid in the beginning of the mittens. It´s a bit challenging, if you can´t make out my description, there are some great tutorials on the internet just search for ”how to make a latvian braid”.

Finished meassures of the mitten is: 19 cm width, 18 cm to the thumb and 14 cm from the thumb to the top. The thumb is 6,5 cm.

You can also alter the size of the mitten by using bigger or smaller needles.

The yarns suggested can easily be changed for some other yarns, just make sure the gauge is right.

I used a 2-ply wool yarn measuring about 300 m/100 grams (sport)
Gauge: 31 stitches and 31 rows =10 x 10 cm.

I hope you will enjoy this pattern.
Happy knitting!
