The local grocery store is encouraging the use of reusable bags so I decided to make some market bags. This is the first is a series of 4 designed to accommodate the the size of your purchases/ This bag is meant for quick trips for a few small essentials.

The strap is worked first and the rest of the bag is attached and worked in the round from the top down which makes the size easily adjustable. Bottom decreases are worked similar to hat shaping. Decreases being on every other round then switch to every round to create the flat bottom. The only finishing is to close the bottom (like the top of a hat) and weave in ends. Blocking is optional.

Gauge is 20 sts/26 r = 4”/10 cm in Stockinette Stitch
Gauge is not critical for this project but any change in gauge will affect yarn requirements and overall size.

Finished measurements:
Strap: 21 ½”/55 cm
Main body (unstretched) 7”/18 cm x 21”/53 cm.
Bottom circle diameter: 5½”/14cm.

Sample used 93g/204 yd/187 m of DK weight cotton yarn however you can use any yarn you feel is appropriate for a market bag.

Length of handles and height of bag can easily be modified to suit personal taste but keep in mind any changes you make will affect total yarn requirements.
