If you’ve got to knit a plain ribbed hat (and what is more universally acceptable?) then this is one way to have a knitting experience that won’t bore you to tears . Ribs that count up from 1 to 4, give a little more visual interest and still create a super-stretchy and snug fitting hat.

Pattern contains
Written instructions for main pattern and crown decreases (charts for crown decreases only). Links to tutorials for suggested cast on bind off etc.

Sizes :
Choose a size approx. 10cm-15cm (4-6 in) smaller than your actual head measurement.

This is a super-stretchy hat and so size bands are broad and can be worn with 10-15% negative ease.

Finished sizes:

Age approx. 8 years - Adult S-M (to fit head sizes :53-58 cm/20 ¾ in-23in)
Adult L-XL: (to fit head sizes 59cm/23 ¼ in plus)

Gauge & needles:
28 sts to 10cm/4 in over stockinette. 2.5 mm (US 1) circular needle or correct needle size to achieve gauge. You can use DPNS if you prefer. Pattern assumes magic loop, but you may substitute your preferred method for small circumference knitting when decreasing the crown.

Skills required:
Knitting in the round

Adult L-XL: 206m/225yds
