This holiday cowl in a bright festive red is inspired by a photo I saw of a zig-zag trail down the side of an alpine mountain.

The item can be worn two ways: as a standard cowl extending down to the waist, or as an infinity scarf, doubled around the neck.

The cowl is worked in the round so no sewing is required.

Gauge is not majorly important for this project. If you’re close to the 8 stitches/2 inches in double crochet (or about 15.5 stitches/4 inches) and your first three rounds together measure 1.25 to 1.5 inches tall, you’re in the ball park for the finished size indicated in the pattern.

The finished size of my samples using the recommended yarn was 5 to 5.25” wide by about 46” around.
