The pattern includes: A general overview; extensive material and pattern notes with recommendations for tutorials; a chart with an overview of how to read charts; photos of eight samples knit up with complete descriptions and notes; acknowledgments and end notes.

This pattern is an offshoot of the ṭāqīyah (skullcap)/beanie patterns I have been working on for many years now. It knits up as a prayer skullcap or a beanie. The pattern is based on traditional motifs derived from the Palestinian headscarf (kufiyyeh). The brim reflects an olive-leaf motif and the main part of the beanie a hounds-tooth pattern.

The beanie is knit up in stranded colorwork. The brim is a variation that developed inspired by corrugated rib. It features a motif of knit stitches in the contrast color on a field of purl stitches in the main color. The purl stitches tend to relax and stretch with wear, and the motif (which might not seem too visible at first) then becomes apparent.

This is more or less a “one size fits most” pattern, knit up for an adult-sized head. Changing needle size and yarn weight as well as section-repeat count will allow for variety here, as seen in the samples section. I prefer beanies that fit snugly to the head; slouchiness is quite possible given further material exploration.

The premise behind the doubled-up needle sizes is to work the brim on a needle a half-millimeter smaller (be careful with US sizes, they don’t step equally). This takes into account the corrugated rib variation that lies a bit flatter, as well as shaping for the contour of the head. Feel free to vary this, maintaining half a millimeter between needle sizes.

Suggested yarn weight is fingering or sport. A variety of different brands of fiber have been tested for this pattern in both cotton and wool.

Thank you and happy knitting!
