One day when I was in my local yarn shop, I was admiring a sample cowl that the owner had knitted. Amanda’s sample included a simple slip stitch column that really drew attention to the yarn. I took that inspiration and built a column of knit stitches to support the slip stitches as they rise above the surface of the cowl. The simple cable motif invokes columns of fog rising above a lake on a chilly morning. You will want to wrap the large version of this cowl around your neck several times to bundle up and keep the chill off.

Knitted in worsted weight, this cowl is easily adaptable to other yarn weights. The size of the cowl can be adjusted (both in the height and the circumference) by modifying the number of motifs that are knit. Yarns in solid or tonal colorways will work best to show off the cowl’s cables; wildly variegated yarns will not.

This pattern is appropriate for an adventurous beginner while remaining interesting for more advanced knitters.
