Yes, I’m one of those Gen X women who discovered the Indigo Girls in the early 90s and has been singing along ever since. If you know, you know! Just as with Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, the hues in this shawl highlight the earthy and the ethereal, the pragmatic and the poetic. The alternating lace patterns bring to mind harmonies so well-balanced and entwined, you’re not sure where they begin or end. Knit double-stranded in wool and mohair/silk bases from Marianated Yarns, the large finished shawl is as comforting as another listen to “Galileo” or “Closer to Fine”.

This pattern contains both fully charted and written instructions.

Recommended Yarn:
Marianated Yarns Practicality 75/25, one skein each of two different colors — 75% superwash Merino / 25% nylon — 463 yds (423 m) to 100 g.

Marianated Yarns Aerie, one skein each of two different colors — 72% superkid mohair / 28% mulberry silk — 459 yds (420 m) to 50 g.

Yarns are held together throughout, a strand of Practicality 75/25 held with the same shade in Aerie, for a total of four skeins. Pattern uses approximately 890 yds (813 m) of yarn double-stranded, or 1780 yds (1628 m) of individual yarns in total (amounts include a 10% cushion for gauge differences). If substituting, I recommend using a wool base with comparable yardage to Practicality 75/25.

Sizing:
80” (203 cm) across and 36” (91.5 cm) deep.

Blocked Gauge:
14 sts and 28 rows to 4” (10 cm) in stockinette st, 14 sts and 26 rows to 4” (10 cm) in lace pattern — all on smaller needle.

Needles:
US 8 (5 mm) circular needle (or size that gives gauge) in a 32” (80 cm) length, plus a US 9 (5.5 mm) needle (or one size larger than main needle) for bind-off.

PLEASE NOTE: I knit the sample with a US 9 (5.5 mm) needle and a US 10 (6 mm) for the bind-off, but as I tend to knit fairly tightly, I’ve listed needles one size smaller. Changes in gauge will affect finished size, look of motifs, and amount of yarn used. To meet these dimensions and to ensure enough yarn, be certain to use needle size that gives gauge.

Other Materials:
Four stitch markers (more markers can be used within lace pattern if desired), tapestry needle.
