Pattern in Knitting Traditions Fall 2011 on page 114 and is named: An Orenburg Warm Shawl.

Not to be confused with An Orenburg Warm Shawl from Knitting Traditions Winter 2010.

This pattern is available individually from Galina Khemleva, or as a kit from her website. If you order the kit, call her number on her website and leave a message that you would like to order the kit. You can specify the colors in which you’d like to make the shawl (e.g., reds, greens). Her kit has in the past included two larger skeins and a smaller skein in a 50/50 cashmere/silk blend plus the pattern.

Her pattern includes handwritten notes to make a larger version of the shawl. If you go that route you need to know that for the other portions of the shawl to work out properly, you can do 5 OR 9 repeats of the border charts, and that you will carry an extra two stitches at the end of each row in the main body chart. Finally, the increase results in 75 teeth going across the final top border.

No errors noted in the website pattern.

From the Piecework article:

“The Russian people are survivors - as fiercely proud of their resilience as they are of their remarkably strong sense of family. Accordingly, the ultimate expression of love and respect for a Russian woman is to receive the gift of an Orenburg warm shawl .. from her loved ones. The shawl usually marks a significant time in the woman’s life, and the most common element found in the border segments of warm shawls is the heart. Thus, our triangular warm shawl has a chain of hearts in the border.”

The pattern starts on page 51.
The pattern calls for 3 colors of 300 yds. each of the Moco yarns qiviut blend: Purple, Cranberry, and Dark Plum.
