When I was working as a doctor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology I was chatting to one of my colleagues. When she found out I knitted she immediately asked me if I could make her a knitted uterus to practice B-Lynch sutures on. This is a special type of stitch used to compress a womans uterus if she has uncontrollable bleeding after giving birth, It is one of the last resorts to save a womans life before the drastic step of performing a hysterectomy. Doctors rarely have to perform this stitch in real life so models on which to practice are useful and mean surgeons can practice and teach others so they are confident about what to do in an emergency. This model had a Caesarean scar as some women on who the stitch is performed may have had a Caesarean. I have given several of these model uteri for obstetricians I have worked with and they are always delighted. I know that my models have been shown off to colleagues at conferences all over the world. Please consider knitting a uterus for your obstetrician (or midwife) as a thank you present and as a contribution to their continuing professional development.

This should use less than 50g of bulky yarn or DK yarn held double.
