I wanted to design a pair of fingerless mitts for my son’s teacher gift that were functional and stylish.

The result is a snug and accommodating ribbed mitt interrupted by symmetrical cabling across the back of the hand.

I love how the open cable gets displayed more prominently when worn. The mitt is constructed from the wrist to the fingers forming the thumb through knit increases to form a gusset. Thumb stitches are then placed on a holder to be finished later after the rest of the hand is completed. The cable pattern is charted and written. Each hand is written separately with a separate chart. The smaller cables can be knit without a cable needle but for the larger cable, a cable needle is necessary.

Selfishly, I wanted to be able to have a pair of these for myself so I adapted the pattern for smaller hands as well. The cuff, top of the hand, and thumbs can be adjusted easily by adding more or less length to your taste. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did creating them!
