“Don’t pick the flowers. You may look at them, but do not pick the flowers.”

It’s funny, the memories that stay with you. My father’s garden on the Manitoba prairies was a place of beauty and magic, bought through hard labour and a defiance of hardiness zones and climate. On one side of the house, sheltered against the warm brick wall of my father’s study, Anemones bloomed every spring. I did not realize, being just a small girl, that my offered tribute of small white blossoms would kill the plants; I just remember the sadness my father’s admonition brought me, and the worn wood of the floor, and the scuffed toes of my sneakers.

Anemone Canadensis is a single-skein triangular shawlette with a rounded rather than pointed bottom edge, featuring a panel of five-petalled flowers and a beaded lace border. Because the wings of the body are worked in simple stockingette, this pattern is perfect for a skein of beautifully variegated yarn.

Materials Needed:

  • @450 yards of light fingering weight yarn
  • 4mm (US size6) needles or needle size needed to get gauge1
  • 2 stitch markers to mark center panel of body
  • @800 6/0 seed beads (754 beads called for in pattern)
  • a small (0.5mm) crochet hook or other method for beading
  • 23 stitch markers to mark pattern repeats of border

My thanks to Naomi Parkhurst of Gannet Designs for permission to use the Buttercups and Rain lace motifs featured in this pattern.

  1. Note that gauge is not essential for lace knitting. Unless you have limited amounts of yarn, I encourage you to swatch instead for a fabric you like rather than to precisely match pattern gauge.
