Anemone fingerless mittens are ideal as a first double-knit project. These gorgeous mittens are knit in rows using several interesting techniques. You start with a provisional cast-on, then knit a sweet picot hem which will sit around the fingers. Next you work the hand using double-knit stocking stitch in a simple grid pattern. Finally you work a double-knit rib, ending with a simple edging. Just one seam and you can wear your fingerless mittens.

The double-knit technique creates two interlocking layers simultaneously. Double-knit fabric has more body than a single layer, yet remains light when worked in a soft, fluffy yarn such as Kidsilk Haze from Rowan Yarns. Just right for those of us who suffer from cold hands, and need to keep them cozy while doing other things.

Anemone fingerless mittens are a lovely stash buster since they use small amounts of yarn in a few colors. You could have a lot of fun choosing alternative color combinations.

Other details

This pattern is available in two versions: there’s one written for those who knit left-handed as well as the standard one for those who knit right-handed.

Most of you knit right-handed, that is, your stitches move from the left to right needle as you knit: choose “knitting right-handed”.

Some of you knit left-handed, that is, your stitches move from the right to left needle as you knit: choose “knitting left-handed”.

If you are a left-handed knitter who knits right-handed, that is your stitches move from the left to right needle, you should choose “knitting right-handed”.
