This pattern is for an Estonian shawl featuring both an Estonian Edging, and an Estonian Focal Stitch. If you have never knitted an Estonian Shawl and would like to try their method of knitting, this is a relatively easy pattern to begin with, as it has no nupps in it. The delicate edging is added first and last, with the focal stitch easily learned, but lovely to look at. (The focal stitch is one of the Estonian Focal Stitches that comes from the “Paws” collection of stitches.

The pattern is written for two sizes, a regular size shawl (approximately 22 inches x 72 inches), and for a plus size shawl (approximately 27 inches x 78 inches).

Skill Level: Beginner + - Intermediate (assuming some lace knitting experience).

Both stitches are both charted out and written out line by line.

Almost any light fingering yarn can be used for this pattern. The one pictured is a black merino, with a touch of mohair, and some “glitz,” and the stitch still shows nicely.

This pattern was expertly tested by Debi Maige, who can be reached at: locations@ verizon.net
