This pattern dates from the later 1930s, and as number 891 it post-dates Copley’s June Clyde pattern by about a year or more, therefore probably dating it to around 1937–38.

The varied colour combinations suggested are a real joy to see, showing that even in the early days of the fashion there was no restriction to ‘traditional’ Tyrolean colourways. These more adventurous choices of colours do not seem to have been as popular, however, until at least the 1950s. Here is an opportunity to recreate a 1930s Tyrolean pattern in delightful colours, pastel or vibrant, as an alternative to the classic cream background, knowing them to be true to their time.

For this recreated model the colours chosen were as close as possible to ‘Beauty Pink, edged with Mermaid’. Some of the suggested names, although so charmingly lyrical, give no clue at all as to their actual colour! So the message is to enjoy putting them together to your own individual choice.

• 10 × 50 g balls of 4 ply (M)
• 1 × 50 g ball 4 ply contrast (C)
• Oddments of 4 contrasting shades of 4 ply for embroidery
• 1 pair 3.25 mm knitting needles (3.75 mm for larger size)
