This pattern includes specific instructions and charts for the hat pictured. The Anthora motifs of the chart may also be used for anything else that you would like to knit with the classic New York City coffee cup design.

The hat pictured was made as a running hat, so it has the text ‘TOUR DE COFFEE’ (the name of a run club in New York City). For more general use, the charts include two possible text variations, the first would result in a hat spelling ‘NEW YORK CITY’ twice and the second spells ‘WE ARE HAPPY TO SERVE YOU’, the phrase traditionally found on Anthora cups. I have also included a third chart of the upper case English alphabet in case anyone would like to customize the text further. As I have yet to knit samples for either of the two text variations, I would be very appreciative if any knitter who does purchase this pattern and knits one of those variations shares images on their project page — a huge thank you in advance :)

Yarn — For the hat pictured, I used Cascade Heritage (75% superwash merino wool/25% nylon, fingering, 100g/400 meters/437 yards). For exact shades, the blue is 5604 Denim, the white is 5682 White, and the yellow is 5752 Golden Yellow. I used approximately 25 grams of the white and blue and 10 grams of the yellow.

Gauge and tools — I knit the hat (for a 23/24cm circumference head) on 3.25mm (US 3) needles and had a gauge of about 15 stitches x 20 rows per two inches. The hat size is adjusted via the vertical height, but if you have a smaller head (20/21 cm circumference), you can also use 3.0mm (US size 2.5) needles to ensure that the hat is not too loose. In addition to circular needles, you will need double pointed needles for the decreases that shape the top of the hat. You will also need six stitch markers to mark the beginning of round/mark the points at which you do the decreases and a tapestry needle for binding off/weaving in ends.

Techniques and instructions —The pattern for this hat is largely based on the free universal cap pattern by Ravelry user his Majesty gustavs. However, the chart was designed by me. The hat is knit almost entirely in stockinette (except for one round) and primarily involves following the charts provided. In addition to the basic knit and purl stitches, you will also need to know:

  • the long-tail cast-on

  • how to knit stranded colorwork with two colors and catch floats

  • k2tog and k2tog left
