A shawl depicting the winding path to the halls of Ma’at.

Anubis would guide dead souls to Osiris and the halls of Ma’at where they would be judged. Anubis placed a dead soul’s heart upon the Scales of Justice. If the heart was heavier than the feather of Ma’at because the person had failed to lead a balanced life, the soul was found guilty. Such souls would then be fed to Ammit – a demon with the head of a crocodile, the torso of a leopard, and the rear of a hippopotamus. But if found innocent, the soul would be led by Anubis to its heavenly home in the Fields of Malachite
