ENGLISH

The Apfeltaschen.ding is a phone case to hang around your neck, knitted double and without a single seam. Easy to knit, but totally thought through.

It was born on vacation, out of necessity: My new phone didn’t have a case yet, and I am a total scaredy-cat. So I took the yarn that was meant for a shawl and turned it into a case on the spot. The color even matches my new phone perfectly.

Now your phone hangs safely around your neck, even in a dress without pockets. For a quick photo it is out with one grip, and when you knit on the go you read the pattern right on your phone, with your hands free. Unlike on a phone strap it doesn’t hang out in the open: The display stays free of scratches, and strangers can’t read who is texting you.

You knit it all in one piece: Judy’s Magic Cast-On for a seamless bottom, double knitting for a really thick case, no side seam and hardly any ends to weave in. Because seams can come undone, and then the phone falls out. The strap doesn’t cut in.

Apfeltasche is German for apple pocket, the pastry. In the Allgäu, where I come from, it’s an Apfeltäschle.

With videos: Judy’s Magic Cast-On, doubling the stitches and the Italian bind-off are shown in my own tutorials, linked at the right spot in the pattern.
