These socks are a playful, geometric pair of socks inspired by the brilliant twisted stitch designs created by Norah Gaughan. The textured motif is fun to work, easy to memorise once established, and creates a striking effect as it travels down the leg and across the instep.

The socks are knitted from the cuff down, beginning with a simple twisted-rib cuff. They are worked with a heel flap and gusset, followed by a patterned instep and a plain Stockinette stitch sole. The motif continues neatly into the toe shaping, giving the finished socks a clean, balanced look.

Materials

-1 skein of fingering-weight yarn.
The sample uses Knit Picks Hawthorne in Camellia.

-2.25 mm (US 1) needles suitable for working a small circumference in the round. The sample was worked using flexible DPNs, but standard DPNs, magic loop, or two circular needles may also be used.

-Stitch markers and a tapestry needle.

Gauge

35 sts and 50 rnds = 4 in (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch worked in the round, after blocking.
