Dancing great blue herons - birds from the Ardea genus - are the inspiration behind this design. It is a sister project to Ardea Tee.

Texture-centered, the poncho is knit in two panels sideways with contrasting lines of Estonian braids, wrapped and slipped stitches. The finished panels are then seamed along the shoulders. The piece features a straight silhouette with the neckline decorated with delicate Caliper Cables and subtle ribbing along the edges.

The finished top has a lot of built-in positive ease and can be worn at least two ways - with a boat neck or a v-neck - which makes it a perfect throw-over piece for when a bit of extra warmth is needed.
Directions are fully written out and partially charted. Video tutorials for tricky techniques provided.

Construction

  • The poncho is worked flat in two symmetrical panels sideways. Each panel starts and ends with 2x1 ribbing and has a Caliper Cable running along one edge (along the future neck opening and shoulders).

  • Once finished, each panel has stitches picked up for the 2x1 ribbing along the fourth - unfinished - side.

  • Finally, the panels are seamed at the shoulders.

  • The fabric is worked in a variety of horizontal textural patterns: Estonian braids, slipped and wrapped stitches, and stockinette.

  • The length and the width of the top are easy to adjust to fit the desired measurements. Sides can be seamed as well, but this will prevent the top from being reversible.
