Note from the designer: this hat pattern was originally published in issue 6 of Pom Pom Quarterly magazine (Autumn 2013). The single PDF version (released February 2017) corrects all errata and also includes some extra shaping options.

This hat was designed to be the perfect introduction to Celtic cable knitting; the strands of the knot morph cleverly into i-cord ties for an innovative three-dimensional twist. The pattern also includes directions for a version without the ties.

The cabled band is worked first, flat, then grafted together, and stitches are picked up around the edge of the band to work the body of the hat in the round (directions are included for a puffed-out beret version, as well as a more closely-fitted version). The length of the hat can easily be modified to be short or slouchy.

Sizes
Sizes 1 (2, 3) – to fit head circumference of 19 (21¼, 23½)˝/48.5 (54, 59.5) cm

The pink sample shown (top photos) is in Size 3, with ties, close-fitted at the brim and slouchy length; it was worked in Shilasdair Aran weight pure merino lambswool, shade Hawthorn.

The red sample shown in the magazine photos is in Size 2, with ties, beret style shaping at the brim and slouchy length; it was worked in Old Maiden Aunt Bluefaced Leicester Aran, shade Cherry Lips.

Materials
• 5.0 mm/(US size 8) needles (or size needed to obtain gauge); DPNs or needles for preferred method of working small circumferences in the round
• approx. 190 (200, 210) yds/[174 (183, 192) m] of aran/worsted weight yarn.
Note that yardage amounts assume the hat is worked with ties, beret shaping and slouchy length; any other variations will use slightly less yarn than the yardage stated.
• Cable needle
• Waste yarn
• 4 stitch markers
