Designer Note: “These socks are knit from the toe up. There are several ways to cast on for toe up socks. This pattern uses Judy’s Magic Loop, etc. Short rows shape the heel which is an alternative to the heel flap and gusset technique used for most socks. The November 07-January 08 issue of Cast On included a Short Row Heel lesson.”

“The lace pattern is worked 4 times on the instep. After the heel is worked, the lace pattern is worked 8 times around the cuff. A slipped stitch is worked at the center back of the cuff, separating the lace pattern. The calf is shaped by increasing on either side of this slipped stitch which runs the length of the cuff. The center back stitch is slipped on odd numbered rows and knit on even numbered rows.”
