My designs are a lot about symmetry and shape, and this is no exception. ’Årsringar’ is the Swedish word for annual growth rings and an amazing organic shape that gave inspiration to this design. It is a simple brioche and garter stitch shawl, where each section of brioche grows bigger with the increasing size of the shawl. The result gives a beautiful colourful shawl with a large wingspan, making it perfect to wrap around your neck. I hope you like it!

Fingering version:

Yarn: FruValborg Merino Single, 365m/399 yds per 100g and FruValborg MerLin Singles 366m/400 yds per 100g. You can use any other fingering weight yarn.

Needles: 3.5 mm/US 4, 40-80 cm/16-32’’ long circular needles. Increase length of your circular needles when necessary due to number of stitches. Check your gauge and adjust needle size if necessary.

Gauge: 20 stitches x 24 rows for 10x10 cm / 4’’ in brioche stitch, 20 stitches x 48 rows for 10x10 cm / 4’’ in stockinette, blocked. Gauge is important for yardage as well as the finished size of the shawl.

Finished size: 250 cm/ 98,5’’ wingspan length, 55 cm/ 21,5’’ from cast on to bottom edge measured along the centre (blocked).

Yardage: Sample shown knitted with Colour 1 (Golden) 365m/399 yds, Colour 2 (Bosslady) 330m/360 yds, Colour 3 (Hurricane) 275 m/300 yds.

Other tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

DK version:

Yarn: You can use any DK-weight yarn. Sample shown knitted with yarns from Knitritious, M200 115g/230m (250yds), colourways C1: Kommunens snödump (OOAK) C2: Brunt Orange.

Needles: 4.5 mm/US 7, 40-80 cm/16-32’’ long circular needles. Switch to longer circular needles as your shawl grows, to accommodate the increasing stitch count. Check your gauge and adjust needle size if necessary.

Gauge: 18 stitches x 22 rows for 10x10 cm / 4’’ in brioche stitch, 18 stitches x 44 rows for 10x10 cm / 4’’ in stockinette, unblocked. After blocking the gauge should be 13 stitches x 17 rows for 10x10 cm / 4’’ in brioche stitch. Gauge is important for yardage as well as the finished size of the shawl.

Finished size: Size M (L): 195cm/77’’ (228cm/90’’) wingspan length, 52cm/20.5’’ (64cm/25’’) from cast on to bottom edge measured along the centre. Measurements taken after blocking.

Yardage: Sizes M (L), ending after Brioche 7 for M or Brioche 8 for (L). Total yardage 600m/655yds (835m/915yds). The yardage between the colours are split evenly, with an additional 35m/38yds for the colour used for bind off.
