IN summer or winter a cardigan is a necessary adjunct to the most complete or incomplete wardrobe, as a light woollen jacket is an essential in our climate of rapid changes.

Following are directions for knitting an unusual type of cardigan to fit a 32in bust. The colors chosen are soft green, with the motif worked in dark green, buff and orange on the left and right fronts, and centre back.

Materials Required: 10 oz of 4-ply wool, in light green, 2 oz buff, and 1 oz each of dark green and orange. The cardigan may have a ribbed basque or a narrow ribbed border, and as the ribbing always looks better in a finer stitch, use No. 8 needles for body of the work, and No. 10 for the ribbing. The basque should be about 6in deep, and the border about 1½ in. The length of sleeve to the underarm is 19 in, and the length from the shoulder about 23½ in.

The pattern doesn’t give gauge, but 7 spi would yield a 33¾ in. finished bust. The pattern as written also doesn’t give instructions for the ‘ribbed basque’. The ribbed hem is 7 rows deep, and the intarsia is knit in stockinette.
