The Arundo Mittens draw their name from the graceful reed, Arundo donax, known for its tall, elegant stems. Their clean ribbed texture captures the quiet rhythm of slender grasses swaying in the wind – simple, satisfying, and endlessly pleasant to knit. This design works as well with busy colorways as it does with solids. For extra warmth, adjust the length as desired – and don’t skip the folded cuff!

The main stitch pattern is both charted and written out.

Size

  • 1 (2) (3): to fit a hand circumference of 15–19 (19–23) (23–27)cm (6–7½ (7½ –9) (9–10½)in)
  • Finished hand circumference, unstretched: 12.5 (15) (18)cm (5 (6) (7)in)
  • Length: 17cm (6¾in), adjustable

  • Sport/DK weight, 220 (265) (310)m, (240 (290) (340)yds)
  • Purl Soho Good Wool (100% Andean Highland wool), sport, 100g (3½oz), 350m (383yds), in Heirloom White
  • The pattern can be used with lightly variegated yarns

Needles

  • 3.25mm (US 3) circular needles for magic loop method, a set of DPNs or other needles for knitting small circumferences

Gauge

  • 32 sts and 36 rows measure 10 x 10cm (4 x 4in) over 1x1 half-twisted rib, unstretched, after blocking
  • Swatch to determine the needle size that achieves the correct gauge

Construction

  • Make both mittens the same way.
  • The mittens are knit from the bottom up seamlessly in the round. They can be worked one by one or at the same time using the magic loop method.
  • The thumbs and bottom cuffs are worked in 1x1 half-twisted rib, and the top cuff in 1x1 twisted rib to allow for folding.
  • Increases shape ergonomic thumbs, then thumb stitches are placed on hold and finished after the mittens are completed.
