DesignTo start with, the Amalöy-cardigan was a ME-ME-ME project!
I was inspired by the colors of my beloved Asmalöy, a tiny island of Norway, where I have spent some time every summer from the age of 1. The colors of the archipelago are rich and soft at the same time, the cliffs has an undescribable color of soft browns, the flora is often in subtle tones of ochre, greyish green… I have a deep love for those colors. And I wanted to use them for a classic cardigan to be worn for years to come.
When the cardigan was finished one of my sisters took the photos presented here at Asmaloy - when I saw them I was thinking: I need to make a pattern for those who wants to make a cardigan using their favorite color combination. Lots of work is put into the pattern, all parts; sleeves, lower and upper body are charted.

Sizes
Finished chest measurements:
Chest circumference: 87/93/99/106/112cm = 34/36.5/39/41.5/44”.

Construction
Seamless, with a front steek.- The lower body is worked bottom-up and in-the-round. You cast on and join the sts in-the-round. After a ribbed hem you work stranded knitting to underarms. At underarms sts are bound-off (or spared) and work is left on hold

  • The sleeves are worked bottom-up and in-the-round. You cast on and join sts in-the-round. After a ribbed cuff you work stranded knitting with regular increases. At underarms sts are bound-off (or spared). When both sleeves are worked you:
  • Join body and sleeves. Work is continued in-the-round and in stranded knitting until the neckline. The upper body is shaped by raglan-decreases.
  • The neckline is worked in rib-pattern from spared and picked-up sts.
  • Securing and cutting of the steeks: read further in the pattern instructions.
  • Button-band and buttonhole-band: are worked in rib-pattern from picked-up sts’

Materials
Yarn: I used the fingering weight yarn ”Mini Alpakka” from Sandnes Garn to work the cardigan. This yarn comes in balls of 50gr/1.76oz and 150m/164yards. You will need 4/4/5/5/6 balls of MC (beige), 3/3/4/4/5 balls of CC1 (brown), 1 ball of CC2 – (ochre), 1 ball of CC3 (ocean green). Please keep in mind that choosing an alpaca yarn means that you need to reinforce the steek by machine.
The yarn fibers are too long and soft for steeking the edges by crocheting. If you prefer to secure your steeks using the crochet method you should choose a fingering weight yarn in a sticky wool. Needles: use needle size to obtain gauge. 1 long, circular needle 3mm/US2.5 for the lower and upper body. A set of dpns (5 needles) 3mm/US2.5 for the sleeves. The sleeves might also be worked using a circular needle and the magic loop. 1 pair of straight needles 3mm/US2.5 for the button-bands and neck-edge.
Notions: 6 removable stitch-markers, separate holders, blunt tapestry needle, blocking tools. 10 (or less/more) buttons 1.4mm/0.55” across.

Gauge 28 sts and 32 rounds = 10x10cm/4x4”, in stranded pattern.
