Inspiration:

I was intrigued in knitting lace patterns using stranded technique, playing with increases and decreases, hooliganizing it along the way. Admittingly, the possibilities are endless.
This cowl is the first knitted using this idea.

In real estate the slogan is “Location, location, location!”, I echo that in knitting with “Texture, texture, texture!”. It is the key, in my book, to exquisite outcome. I rarely see purling used in stranded knitting. I rarely see well balanced decreases and increases. The obvious thought sneaks in…. “Why not? We must try!” The effect is nothing short of wonderous. Creating textures beyond this world. Serendipitous connection, which I will revisit over and over and hope to have you inspired.

I chose classic colours, for this classy design.

Attersee is a lake in Salzkammergut region of Austria, dear to my family’s heart. My husband spent several glorious years of his youth there. Later, as a family, we discovered the works of Gustav Klimt and his love for “our” lake. The name for this cowl stems from his painted renditions of this beautiful water. We visited Kammer, Austria several years ago for the grand opening of the Gustav Klimt Center, I will forever remember the contradictory simplicity and complexity of his “Attersee” painting.

Here I am, painting with yarn.

Sizes: one size (customizable)

Finished Measurements: Measured lying flat, Approx. 12 in (30 cm) width; 10 in (25 cm) height If a looser cowl is desired, add length by working additional multiple(s) of the chart. Modification requires more yarn usage.

Gauge: 24 sts/ 24 rows in 4 in/10 cm blocked swatch worked in the colorwork as charted on size 7 US needles. Knitted in the round.

Adjust needle size to achieve gauge, although gauge is not crucial. Measuring gauge in this pattern is somewhat challenging, as the stitches aren’t evenly aligned, and flow like the waves on lake Atter.

Yarn: Juniper Moon Farm “Dromedary” (blend of camel and merino) 1 skein= 290 yards (100g)

Colours/Amounts needed: 1 skein of each

  1. Grizzly river (blue)= MC
  2. Maplewood (beige)= CC

Notions:
• Size 7 US (4.5 mm) 16-inch (40cm) circulars needles,
• 1 stitch marker to denote BOR, additional markers to denote chart repeats as desired,
• Darning needle.

Skills required:
• Stranded knitting from chart,
• Simple left and right leaning increases,
• Simple knit and purl sts,
• Simple seaming,

Notes about construction:
Knitted stranded, in a tube, then seamed together at ends after desired length (circumference of cowl) is reached.
Catching floats is recommended on knit sts only and at least every 3rd st. Stagger float catch points.
