Autumn Child
The Autumn Child is a quickly made onesie in aran to worsted weight yarn, worked top-down seamlessly in the round. The raglan yoke features a Norwegian colourwork chart that repeats at the cuff for the sleeves and legs.
The pattern offers three length options for the legs for each size. Regardless, I strongly recommend knitting longer than you think you will need so the child can wear the onesie as they grow.
I hope you will enjoy this pattern, and if you need any help, please do not hesitate to contact me in my Ravelry group ‘Skeindeer Knits’. It’s the best place for swift support.
And before anyone asks: the adorable bunny hat is store bought and I don’t know where my sister got it from I’m afraid.
Yarn
Rauma Finullgarn (100% wool, 175 m / 191 yds, 50g) held double to make Aran-weight yarn. Three colours needed.
You will get the best result with Aran-weight non-superwash woollen spun sheep wool yarn. Yarn alternatives to hold double: Navia Duo, Hillesvåg Vilje or Ask, Sandnes Tove etc.
Yarn amounts
Main colour: (160, 260, 390) (520, 670, 860) m / (180, 290, 430) (570, 740, 940) yds
Contrast colour 1: (100, 120, 140) (150, 170, 220) m / (100, 130, 150) (170, 190, 240) yds
Contrast colour 2: 10-15 m/yds
Needles
Gauge-size needles for raglan yoke, body, legs and sleeves, 1 mm below-gauge circular needles for ribbed neckline, hem and cuffs.
The sample was made using 5.5 mm (US 9) for stockinette, 5 mm (US 8) for rib, and 6 mm (US 10) to get gauge in colourwork.
Gauge
16 sts x 26 (22) rnds = 10 cm / 4” in stockinette stitch (stranded colourwork).
Sizes
(0-1/4, 1/2-1, 2-3) (4-6, 7-9, 10-12) years
The sizes are made to fit up to the given years of age. However, the best way to choose a size is based on chest measurement, plus 5 cm / 2” of positive ease.
Notions
(6, 7, 8) (9, 10, 11) buttons (20 mm / 0.8” diameter) and twice as many markers.
A crochet hook about the same size as your below gauge-size needles.
Construction
The onesie is worked top-down in the round with raglan increases, and a steek running from after the neckline to just before the legs.
The body is worked straight in the round, and there is shaping for the bum and legs before working the two legs separately in the round.
The sleeves and legs are worked similarly, decreasing evenly, and then decreasing several stitches at the cuff for a subtle balloon effect.
The steek stitches do not count towards your total stitch count, and should be secured using the crochet method before you cut through. If you have substituted with superwash yarn, you should secure the steek with sewing machine seams on either side.
